I got bored and thought I'd tweak my blog template...it's been a while.
dear frog I have no idea what I'm doing...........hmmm
I feel like someone stole my sausage. Well, no turning back now :P
I began this blog while learning to run and training for my very first race! Now I'm just your friendly neighborhood mad scientist still trying to live a healthy life...day by day :)
It's a date
Just got a letter in the mail with my final final plastic surgery date - March 14. Phew - so yeah... 2 months until my last (knock on wood) surgery date ever. Lift my real boob to match the fake one better and take some fat from my muffin top and pad out Frankie a bit more. The fat grafting will probably hurt more than the lift, but we shall see. I am supposed to be off work for 2-3 weeks, so I anticipate heading back to work at the start of April. I am glad to have a timeline and know that it'll all soon be over. My doc has said that after this I'll probably be as good as I can get and so that'll be enough for me...time to get on with life.
It's given me a bit of a kick in the ass to decide I'll go a bit more hard core with my workouts and see how it all goes. Being as close to my ideal weight as possible will be helpful for the surgery, since my fake boob doesn't gain weight like the real one does, so it's trickier to match it well if I'm not close to where I want to be in the end. I pulled out my old copy of Insanity and decided to start it this week before I could talk myself out of it. Did the fit test today and kept my scores...we shall see how I progress over the next month. Having a concrete goal and date always helps me focus - Here's hoping I can stick to it. I remember it being intense, but doable. We shall see.
I am excited because next week I go to Portland for 6 days for training for work. I never did get to Portland when I was in the US last fall, so I am hoping there will be some cool things to do in the evenings. For now, I'm just gathering up stuff and passport and all those fun things.
I should get to it - lots of lab stuff to do this week since I'll be away next one. Have a fabulous week!

The year of the wow
The changes in my partner in the last month have been remarkable. I really am quite in awe of his work, not only being done on himself, but also at our lives. He is taking time to deal with some anxiety and some relationships that have been toxic for him and find more fulfilling work to be busier and more fulfilled. Since January he has been on a quest to reorganize our home with his time that he has to spare at home and our house is literally being transformed. His goal is to have the 3rd level as a studio madness workshop and I am absolutely on board with that - all his stuff in one area and not all over the house? Cool.
Areas of the home that were full of stuff and clutter are now clean and useful and things have homes so we can better keep them organised. He was inspired once h did a bit of organising to finally go through things in the house - I am not good at decluttering. I just make new piles. He is tossing and ordering and...well...wow. There is a whole part of the basement fully open now that I stood in last night that I honestly have not been able to get into for YEARS. It's really amazing.
He's also been offered full time work with a local lighting company who do live events and theatre, and they are treating him really well. 1 week officially there and it's been great so far. It all came out of the live work he was doing the last few months at a local theatre. He's learning new equipment and getting to do what he loves with people who also like to do lighting and decor. He's also found a collaborator for working with lights, video and lasers here in town who is as into things as he is so for the first time in a long time he has the potential to create and make things again and isn't tied to toxic unhealthy people who bring him down.
I don't know if it's a combination of therapy and medication and life and work and fullfillment but J is so much more positive and caring. He's even more aware of when he says things without a filter and is trying to be a bit more...kind. I am really in love and the edginess and stress that was so prevalent in our lives last year has drifted off into the breeze to leave behind our love. It sure helps that I really love when he does things around the house and it's amazing to see him and not me working so hard to make our home amazing. I really would not be able to do this. I am super busy at work right now, but am doing my part to maintain clarity and pick away at things I feel need work as well - mostly trying to make sure we both eat healthy and workout regularly. I've been reading/listening to "the happiness project" and I think 2018 is going to be a renewed focus on contentment, being present and decluttering/organizing so that where I live makes me happy.
My life is so nice now. I am full of gratitude and hope.
2018 is the year of the wow.
...and also the new Beck album is seriously great. Listen to it. Go on...
Ya snooze ya lose
I had grand hopes for the morning - get up and workout before coming in to work.
I failed.
I couldn't sleep so I took an ativan to help and I did get a good rest, but I didn't wake up well. I hit snooze a few times without noticing and cut out my workout time. It was warm enough at least that I could walk to work, but no morning workout for me. I do plan to go to dragon flow yoga at lunch tho so there is that. I'm also a part of a daily arms and legs mini workout challenge from a cancer recovery fitness facebook group so I'll fit that in too. They are 3X10 reps of 3 different exercises that are easy to fit in the day. It helps me feel better.
I do plan to get to more dedicated workouts this week though. I stayed up to wierd hours on the weekend and had an amazing weekend...but realised jsut how that makes me exhausted for work. So I need to reign that in again.
Oh well - new week. I am already finding myself to be more flexible and core strong from the yoga I have been doing. I am particularly pleased about the increased balance and fine muscle control I am gaining. THAT is cool. Perhaps I will move beyond being Clumsy McGee :)
Happy monday my good peeps. I'm off to the lab.

Looking for answers
It's odd - I get asked this a lot.
Some people seem to think that having been through the illness I have I should have some kind of quest for deeper meaning and hope that I didn't have before. Being raised in a religious family certainly gave me some starting points, but I will admit to a lot of screaming and ranting at the sky while ill, and that in the end I have not found any sort of faith or meaning that I didn't have before and I have relied on knowledge to carry my through the worst of it all. My mum had a very strong faith and it sustained her while she was ill and I would never have tried to take that from her - but for me that wasn't how it worked. It's not like I didn't think about dying - and truly I'm not scared to die anymore. With me, now I just have so much to do that I don't want to have to stop before I finish it all. To me clutching to a belief I do not have simply because I was dying and thought it might be a good idea to hedge my bets against an eternity and unknown conclusion is not a valid reason for faith. Maybe I'm weird that way...but faith is faith and belief is belief...regardless of where you are in life...or death. I am committed to a lifetime of learning.
In the end, I currently get by with the love and support of my partner and family, a little help from my friends and a lot of knowledge from wherever I can find it. The line in this cartoon sums it up completely for me - "I find my courage where I can, but I take my weapons from science."
And yes...2 years later I'm still doing science and I'm still alive :)

Happy Mew Year
I am sitting with my Dax asleep in my lap, drinking amazing coffee and listening to some great music. I have slept in and am getting myself together for a fun evening over with some friends to ring in the new year with music and laughs. I am happy. I am content.
This is life.
Cheers to a new year my friends :)
Polar Vortex
Currently the weather here in Saskatoon is indeed winter. We are currently in the middle of a polar vortex. We are actually colder than both the north and south poles at the moment. -33 C before the windchill...-41 after....and will get down to -37 before the wind and -48 with it tonight at the worst of it all, with the ultimate predicted low of -49 with the wind tomorrow night.
Bleh.
The chill will be with us ever so inconveniently until my holidays are done and I get back to work on the 3rd. Normally we get to maybe mid-minus 20s with the wind...this current madness is dangerous. We have had to replace our car old battery...and it's so cold that even with the new battery the stereo in it isn't working at the moment. A friend had his spoiler on his hatchback break just from him closing it this morning. Yep...It's the kind of cold that turns door handles into torturous devices if you aren't wearing gloves and it would easily kill you if you weren't properly dressed. We were considering visiting friends for new years in Edmonton but when it's this cold the thought of having any car problems and being stuck outside is actually frightening...it's looking more likely like we will remain here and celebrate here warm in a friend's house instead...a 6 hour drive without a car stereo would be really boring too.
This is a dumb level of cold that makes you eat extra food, drink scotch and google the giant insects of africa and australia to remind yourself of one of the few perks of living in this frozen wasteland...thankfully this kinda cold kills them...and it usually only lasts about a week and comes just once or twice a winter. I wish it wasn't during my holidays - I'd like to be out and about more, but I feel bad using the car in this chill. J is working a good show tonight and I have dropped him and his gear off and come back home to stay warm in the house...I may or may not catch the last bit of it...because I want to make sure the car will start after to get us home. Ridiculous. Truly.
My christmas was lovely though. My family was here for christmas eve and christmas day and we had christmas day at my place for the first time ever...christmas was a brunch and a lazy day of games before a nice turkey supper and more games into the wee hours. Boxing day was spent with Js family and my Dad. All my homemade gifts of jellies and aprons and cookies and picture frames were well recieved and I got the gift I truly wanted - a happy time with my family full of laughter and love. It's honestly been a great last few days and I have a few more to relax, read books and eat the last of the cookies. Splurged on seeing the new Star Wars movie in the VIP theatre yesterday - loved it and the social commentary of it and I am inspired to keep crafting away the winter months and filling the winter hibernation with creativity. Plus I can't keep eating like this heheh...it will be good to be back to a more regular healthy schedule. :)
I hope you're all staying warm. I'm going to go have a hot bath and try and forget the chill outside.

Making Christmas. Maaaaaaking Chriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiistmas!
My family doesn't really do bought gifts anymore...just the little ones. For the rest of us, we make something instead or just eat and visit. Other than some baking, homemade ketogenic nutella, some pepper and roasted garlic jellies and some cranberry apple butter I have made, I have been planning to make a few things for my family. I saved some shells from my Maritime holiday to make framed pictures for my dad, brother and sis for christmas and have had the frames for a while. I finally got around to putting them together last night. I was nervous they'd turn out lame...I am very happy with them. J was a huge help with ideas on how to attach the shells (foam bits and hot glue) and helped me find the sand printed paper I used as a background. I am so pleased with how they went together. The top left one is for me...the rest are for my family - they can chose.
My dad has been lamenting about hos the only kitchen apron he has was my mum's and it's old, girly and very dirty. I bought some suitably Dad fabric (blue denim) and made him a great new kitchen apron and customized it for him. He often answers the phone with "Dave's Deli and Diner" so I thought I'd make it official. :)
I love christmas for this reason - I love to make things...and to make things for my loved ones they will use and appreciate is so rewarding. Mostly food heheh but still :) Last christmas was really not a fun time for me and now, especially after the last while and how much different my life is currently I am in serious gratitude and humble appreciation at how my life is going. I am honestly happy. Life isn't perfect, but there is love and patience and kindness and respect in my life. J and I are working to be better. I have family and friends who love me. I am healthy.
J and I are going to host my family for christmas day at my place so we'll see how that all goes. My brother and his wife usually do but she gets all stressed out about it all, and I don't get stressed about cooking and planning for people at all. Making ketogenic christmas supper will be a challenge, but I can pull it off. We have games and wine and snacks. There will be stuffing cuz I want stuffing dammit but the rest we can tweak so everyone can enjoy it. There will be time with my family - that is all I want. Boxing day is with J's family. Then a week off to relax. I can't wait.
I am really looking forward to my holidays. It's been a long time since I've been excited to spend this much time at home. I have a new Ben Aaronovitch book to read and a lot of posh tea to drink.Tonight I am spending the evening with 2 close friends and after that I have a few days of baking and a big gathering with friends before the family invades.
I hope you are all having a good holiday time and you will have some joy in your life over this holidays. I wish you all a year of joy and love and peace. Good health to you.
sona Nollag!
A work in progress
Hi. How are you all doing out there in interweb land?
Me? Really good. Thanks for asking heheh
But really though - the last little while has been really good. J has been getting some help and we have been slowly working on things and our home is a really positive environment right now. J has been working more doing lights for a local business and is feeling better. I am working to be more honest and we are trying to build a new more positive relationship. So far so good. I am optimistic and working to stay true to myself as we do this. Every day is new and every day is a chance for change.
I am getting back to fitness too which is encouraging. On my maritime holiday I ate on about 10 lb and was starting to eat away my stress the last while. Having a healthy outlet for my stress is helpful too...and it boosts my mood. The family holiday was so amazing. I've been focusing on my life lately and never did post any photos did I? Here's a few...it was lovely.
Eating healthy and getting regular sleep and exercise is helping both J and I feel better so we can work to be better I am also working on making myself healthier. Buying bigger pants is not a solution after decadent (and lazy) holidays- I know consistent healthy living is .:)
It started out this way -a coworker who needs stress release wanted to go to some yoga classes offered on the campus where I work so I started to go with her mondays and fridays too, cuz lord knows I also need a stress release. I've always wanted to try yoga and I have found that I am really enjoying it. Then we tried a few other classes too and although we both got quite stiff for a bit from some of them, we've made it through the worst of it and we are trying to go to a few classes each week together on a regular basis - having a workout buddy helps us both. I am trying to set up a good schedule for me around this. I am finding getting up early every morning to workout at home to be a lot harder than it was right now - don't know if it's the dark of winter or just me listening to my body more and giving it the rest it needs. Instead of giving up, I'm working around it.
So.... I'm shifting my schedule to this for a while to see how it goes to get more active again. Instead of going whole hog and getting crazy about it I trying to find a more zen balance. I want to move away from hardcore HIIT and respect the surgical work I've had done without using it as excuse to not workout...just work on being strong and healthy- I have one more surgery in February that I need to be healthy and strong for and so I am working on being back in better shape (again...sigh) for then. Since the final surgical work being done is largely plastic surgery I will need to be a healthy normal (for me) weight for it to get the best long lasting results. The thing is, even with fat grafting you don't gain weight on a fake boob - just the real one, so having my real one be the "real" size it is will help lift it and reduce it a bit and best make it match the foob (who is now affectionately named Frankie....think Frankenstein...yeah morbid humor...ahem). If I'm gonna go under the knife again I want it to be worth it. I'm tired of it all and while I want to do what I can to make it look as good as I can there is a point where I am just so DONE. My doc feels after this last time he'll have done all he can for me so it's a good time to stop and just get on with my life. Then I can get some pretty tattoos over those scars too :)
When winter is evil it's too cold for my regular walks to work, so I have a need to find other ways to be active. I still walk when weather permits, but that is less and less now. Since a 6 am bus to work gets me to the campus gym 10 minutes before the 6:35 exercise classes start I have a few options for some morning workouts, although I don't think I want to do them every day. It means me getting up at 530 - that can wear me down. With my bosses approval there are some fitness classes right after work and on my lunch break I can work into my schedule now too, so I have a few options besides home workouts (which just aren't happening right now tbh). Right now I need someone else to push me. Since I have the luxury of being able to alter my work hours a bit to accommodate classes I can come in early or stay late as long as I put in my time.. Free admission to the fitness center on campus where I work and is a part of my job benefits, so I might as well use them! I don't want to give up my evenings to this - I want it to fit into my day and just be a part of life, along with less beer and snackycakes and more veggies.
Here's my plan I've started this week:
Monday :a 1 hour lunchtime dragon yoga class - half strength poses and half yin poses
Tuesday- morning spin class before work
Wednesday -spin and sculpt or PiYo class right after work
Thursday- morning spin class before work
Friday - a 1 hour lunchtime restorative yoga class - stretching, and strength poses
Weekend - a Bodyrock workout or walk with J or some upper body weights/squats.
I yesterday I dragged my ass up out of bed to come in for a spin class like I used to back before I got sick - turns out my favorite old instructor is still teaching and they have new spin bikes, so it was a fun experience. I am glad I still liked it -spin class will not aggravate any of my surgical repairs so I figure it's a good thing to get back into. I don't want to commit to every morning anymore, but it's a good way to start ...maybe work in some swimming in the new year. We shall see...
Anyhoo - I has work to do. My break is over.
Happy humpday my good peeps. I hope you have a great day and all is well with you.
Much love to you all this frosty day.

New Hotness
It's my birthday.
Hooray.
My back is still sore but is healing up nicely - my tattoo is nothing less than phenomenal and I am very happy with it. I am obsessing over it as one does with new things, and constantly worrying if I am caring for it well, but I am sure it will heal up fine. It's moving from the owie stage into the dear god why is it so itchy stage.
You would never know I had a thick 7 inch scar across my back. Now it's a work of art. The carnation is for my mum. The DNA dragonfly is a meshing of science and spirituality -legends say dragonflies carry your wishes to heaven; DNA is the language of the living universe. The triskelion represents symmetry...the change through life and a bringing together of things - body, mind and soul...past, present and future. The gears and leaves are my body and spirit growing and changing...my ghost in my machine.
I am absolutely deliriously happy with it all. Jen Lee at Red Tide has specialized training to tattoo over scars and works a lot with cancer patients to help them change their body back into what they chose after treatment. I am so glad to have worked with her on this. It was worth every penny and every minute of the 4.5 hours it took to do. She took all my random ideas and made this for me.
Meep.
Today I've made pulled pork in the slow cooker so I can get home to a lazy meal and then relax. Maybe see a movie...maybe just chill. Don't care.
It's my birthday. I'm here. I'm home. Things are OK.
I'll take it for now :)
Hooray.

It's my birthday. I'm here. I'm home. Things are OK.
I'll take it for now :)
